HALO Program

The Halo program, formerly known as CLS (Community Living Skills) has been in operation since 1979 as an outreach program. Skills are taught to people in their home and in the community environment. The day program component started in 1986 and in 2002 moved to its present location at 4 Tweedsmuir Road in Kirkland Lake. CLS has now been renamed HALO. Healthy Active Learning Opportunities.

Some outreach services provided include: cooking skill development, decision making, pedestrian safety, community integration skills, socialization skills, fine and gross motor skills, swimming, driving range, walking, snow shoeing, skating and yoga class to name a few.

Services are based on the individually expressed goal of the participant. Some of the program in house activities include building healthy relationships, craft activities and projects, exercise and range of motion, music therapy, computers, bingo, baking and cooking classes (that showcase other countries specialties) and gardening.

The program works within a semi structured setting. Allowing participants to maintain their independence and make choices within their schedule. A catalog of classes is offered twice a year to our participants and they choose classes they would like. Sometimes there are waiting lists for individuals to get certain classes that are in high demand.

Venture night is another component of Halo that individuals greatly enjoy. Venture night is an evening of socializing and a planned activity. Individuals have the opportunity to enjoy music nights (including live music) craft night, bingo and games night and seasonal events. At the end of the evening, snacks and refreshments are provided to all those participating.

The Halo program focuses on activities that can be both educational and or physical.
