HALO Program

The HALO Program, which stands for Healthy Active Learning Opportunities, is a core day and outreach initiative at Community Living Kirkland Lake.

Who This Program Is For

This program is designed for adults with intellectual disabilities who want to build independent life skills, participate in recreational activities, and build meaningful friendships within their community. Because all programming is built around the individually expressed goals of the participant, the activities are tailored to support varying levels of ability and interest.

Customized Classes and Outreach Services

To ensure participants are consistently engaged in learning, a specialized catalog of classes is released twice a year. Participants review the catalog and directly choose the classes they would like to attend. Because these classes are highly popular, waiting lists may occasionally occur for high-demand sessions.

Skills are taught both directly inside our facility and out in the community environment. Our programming spans a wide array of disciplines:

• Community Outreach Services: Individualized support focusing on cooking skill development, decision making, pedestrian safety, community integration, and socialization. Physical and motor skill activities include swimming, walking, skating, snow shoeing, yoga classes, and visits to the driving range.

• In-House Activities: Structured learning centered on building healthy relationships, computer literacy, craft projects, gardening, music therapy, exercise, and range of motion support. We also host group activities like bingo alongside baking and cooking classes that showcase culinary specialties from different countries.

Venture Night

A favorite component of the HALO Program is Venture Night, which provides a dedicated evening for socializing and planned group activities. Held in a welcoming environment, individuals enjoy live music nights, games nights, craft sessions, bingo, and seasonal events. Snacks and refreshments are always provided to all participants at the end of the evening to cap off a fun night of community connection.

As the single point of access for all developmental services funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, formal admissions and referrals must be processed through Developmental Services Ontario (DSO).
